25 to 30 students will be taking part in the first ever First Nations Chess Tournament.
Students from 4 schools will be taking part in the event sponsored by Grand Council Treaty #3.
Sasha Sadrudin is a guidance councilor in Grassy Narrows is helping to organize the event and says it’s a chance to bring students from different communities together.
“A lot of the conglomerate events for the Grand Council, most them are athletic or wholistic, and we don’t have any activities or tournaments for students that aren’t athletically interested or have interests outside of athletics,” explains Sadrudin.
Sadrudin adds that it’s also a chance to bring students from different communities together.
“We found that a lot the schools have chess clubs and chess is a huge equalizer for students and at the same time it connects to many aspects of life and education. The idea was to bring all these chess aficionado students together.”
The chess tournament will take place this Thursday at the Seven Generations Institute in Kenora.
