A Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine, or MRI will be coming to Kenora as early as next summer.

The province has announced 7.6 million dollars for the purchase and renovations necessary at Lake of the Woods District Hospital.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford says the local hospital checked all the boxes when it came time to awarding the MRI.

“I mean the three requisite pieces for this are really a plan for health/human resources, so somebody who can operate the machine,” said Rickford following the announcement.

“The capacity to contribute to the capital costs of acquiring the MRI and the appropriate space and renovations that are required for that.”

President and CEO of the hospital, Cheryl O’Flaherty says renovations at the hospital should take anywhere from 4 to 6 months.

“We hope to be able to have the first patients roll through the machine somewhere in the early summer of 2025.  Contruction is set to start in January.  This is a renovation project at the current diagnostic imaging department.”

Currently anyone needing an MRI has to travel to Thunder Bay.
