Kenora city council is unlikely to get a pay raise this year.
A majority of councillors voted against a proposed increase at a budget meeting Tuesday.
Councillor Barb Mason says with all their budget challenges this year, she can’t support the raise.
“I think there is a perception out there, ‘Oh yeah, look at council, gave themselves a raise, and look at us, we’re paying, whatever this budget is going to end up at,” Manson told council at the budget meeting this week.
“I just can’t vote to even give us a raise; with the way the budget is.”
Councillor Lisa Moncrief agreed that this is not the time to be giving themselves a pay raise.
“At this time right now, with this budget, I have to say no.”
Council also deferred making a decision about any increase for non-union staff.
Traditionally they receive what unionized employees of the city get, which would be 3 percent next year, three percent in 2026 and two percent in 2027.
