The City of Kenora should know more next month about the state of the roof at the Keewatin Public Library.
The building has been closed since last summer due concerns about the roof.
Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Greg Breen says a report on the library building is just being completed.
“I just want everyone to understand that once we touch the roof in terms of repairs, the entire roof structure is what will need to be addressed to bring it up to code,” Breen told city council at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday.
“We won’t be able to complete some minor repairs in certain areas.”
He adds that hopefully the work to replace the roof can be completed this year.
“That means we would have to move into having the roof designed and engineered, and then tendering that for construction, and following the building permit process, and inspection and have that installed. And that is what would bring the building back into service.”
Breen says council should be able to decide on a course of action for the Keewatin Library in February.
He adds inspection of the walls of the building show they are in pretty good shape and don’t have to be replaced.
The city’s insurance company has already indicated it would not cover the roof replacement.
Kyle Attanasio, the city’s CAO, indicates they will be applying to the provincial government to cover part of the roof replacement costs.
