Mastromatteo retires from swimming

The most successful swimmer to ever come out of Kenora is retiring.

Gabe Mastromatteo made the announcement on his Instagram account.

“I am done racing for now. The past few years I have dealt with compounding health issues. I have decided to take a step back from the sport to heal and get back to my full self.”

Mastromatteo swam at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and was named the USPORTS male athlete of the year in the 2022-23 season.

In internation competitions, Mastromatteo earned a silver and bronze with Team Canada in the mixed medley and men’s medley relays at the 2023 Pan Am Games in Chile.

At the Olympics, he competed in the 100m breaststroke, and finished seventh in the men’s 4×100 medley relay, and 13th in the mixed 4×100 medley relay.
