The Government of Canada plans to use satellites to help battle wildfires.

The Canadian Space Agency has awarded a $72 million contract to design the Wildfire Sat program.

Spire Global Canada will design the system using seven micro-satellites.

They will be used to provide daily updates to fire managers about wildfires they are fighting.

The government says the data the satellites provide will be able to track fire behavior and identify high risk wildfires.
