OPP reports increase in house fires

It’s been a busy year for house fires in the northwest region.

The OPP say they’ve noticed an increase in preventable fires this winter.

So far, there’s been over 60 fire related calls across the northwest.

Local fire officials say they often see more home fires at this time of year due to the use of heating equipment and appliances.

The OPP recommends that fuel burning appliances be inspected annually and keep chimney and exhaust vents for furnaces and heating appliances free of debris, along with ice and snow accumulations.

Homeowners are also reminded that smoke alarms have to be installed on every floor of your home and outside of all sleeping areas.

Carbon monoxide alarms are also required outside all sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
