Work proposed for Sandy Beach Road

The City of Dryden wants to fix up 2.4 kilometers of Sandy Beach Road between Maple Road and Birchcliff Road.

The project would cost over 5.7 million dollars, but the city is applying to the federal government for 60 percent under the Active Transportation Fund.

Director of Public Works Blake Poole says the road is in need of rehabilitation.

“Trying to improve the base on that road…there are some soft clay spots,” Poole told council earlier this week at their open meeting.

“I think there is only one lift of asphalt there.  We would look at two lifts of asphalt on that street as well. Get rid of some of the soft spots that we do see currently in place on that roadway.”

Poole adds they would re-pave the road and bring it up to a higher standard.

“We’ve looked at some of the traffic, as well as what the road looks like currently.  It does need to be upgraded definitely for heavier traffic.  Its built basically to a rural standard, not really a commercial/industrial standard, with a higher speed as well.”

Part of the upgrade would be to expand the roadway from 6.5 meters to 10 meters, with a three-meter trail that would run alongside of it for biking and pedestrians.

The city had applied under for a grant under the same program two years ago and was unsuccessful.

It’s hoping they will be luckier this time around.
