Kenora City Council has received a petition to keep the Keewatin Library open.

The library and seniors center are currently closed until repairs to the building can be made.

Cindy Christensen presented the petition to council and says all the names were gathered in the past week.

“We also had 467 sign on paper, different places…the Post Office…Keewatin Place…places like that,” Christensen told council during her deputation this week.

“I’m presenting and representing the 1,026 people that signed this petition.”

She adds that in addition to the paper copies, they circulated an online petition as well.

“In a week we had, online, 559 sign encouraging the seniors center and the library to be open and operational.”

Gwen Ruby also had a deputation to council and said how important the New Horizons senior center was to Keewatin, and wondered when they could collect items from that space so they could use it in their temporary location at St. Andrews United Church.

Council has been told the roof has to be replaced on the library, but that work will cost about $500,000.

A full report on the repairs is scheduled to be presented to council at the open meeting on March 18th.
