Council questions complaint process

A member of Kenora City Council did not contravene conflict of interest guidelines.

An anonymous complaint against Bob Bernie has proven to be unfounded according to Kenora’s Integrity Commissioner.

Councillor Kelsie Van Belleghem says she finds the whole process flawed.

“I find it troubling you can make unsubstantiated claims such as this, that use municipal resources,” Van Belleghem told council recently at their monthly open council meeting.

“And to say I do think that we, as leadership, should be held accountable when we do err.  But it’s troubling to read the amount the time, energy and effort.”

Councillor Lisa Moncrief agrees that the whole Integrity Commissioner process is being used incorrectly.

“I called it, when it happened to me, was weaponizing a process.  And that’s what it feels like.  You know, it’s a process that I’m glad it’s there, but when used nefariously, it’s unhealthy.”

Mayor Andrew Poirier says the whole complaint was a waste of time and money for the city.
