Kenora city Council approves expenditure to re-open Portage Bay Bridge

The City of Kenora is looking at opening up the Portage Bay Bridge again.

The bridge has been closed since the end of October due to concern about the safety of the structure.

Director of Engineering and Infrastructure for the city Greg Breen says they are proposing to spend $600,000 for temporary repairs.

“The short-term repair that can be undertaken is primarily steel repairs to the bridge,” Breen told the Committee of the Whole meeting of city council on Tuesday.

“I’ve taken the cost estimate data that Stantec has provided…I’ve added a contingency amount and an inflationary factor, just to make sure I’m not coming back a second time.”

Breen says it would extend the life of the 100-year-old structure by five years.

He adds they will start the process of fixing up the bridge as soon as council officially approves the expenditure.

“Immediately move forward with the design and then the construction of those steel repairs to get the bridge open to pre-closure status.”

No timeline has been given for the bridge to be re-opened.
