The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has cleared the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service of any wrongdoing in relation to an injury suffered by a prisoner at the NAPS detachment office in Mishkeegogamang (New Osnaburgh First Nation), which is just south of Pickle Lake.

The SIU began investigating after a 33-year fractured two of his left fingers.

Their investigation found that he was placed in a cell but made suicidal threats.

Officers removed his clothing and put him into a security gown.

They were concerned though he could use the gown or it’s pieces to harm himself, so they removed it.

As police closed the cell door, the man caught his left hand between the door jamb and the door.

The SIU determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that any of the officers committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s injuries.
