A major milestone in Red Lake.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of gold.

Red Lake mayor Fred Mota says they have a number of special events planned this summer.

“We’ve got many, many events planned on the 25th and 26th of July, the Friday and Saturday,” says Mota.

“We have ministers that will be attending too.  We have a wine and cheese opening event at our Heritage Center, then we’re doing a community event over at the Legion.”

Mota says they’ll have a number of other special events to help celebrate.

“There will be mine tours, and there’s actually a unique museum that’s outside in the west end of Red Lake that you can only get to by boat, so we’re going to be doing boat tours out to there.  We’re going to have static displays of mining all around.”

Gold was initially discovered in 1925 by Ray and Lorne Howey on Burnt Bay, which is now known as Howey Bay.
