Air Quality Warning issued for parts of NWO

Air quality in the region is expected to get worse before it gets better.

Much of the region is already has an Air Quality Statement because of smoke from forest fires in Northern Saskatchewan, Manitoba and along the Ontario border with Manitoba.

But meteorologist from Environment Canada Geoff Coulson says the air quality index can be upgraded.

“We currently have a Special Air Quality Statement in effect talking about these poor conditions, but it’s likely we’re going to see that statement upgraded to an Air Quality Warning due to the fact we’re expected even poorer air quality for a good part of today,” explains Coulson.

Coulson says with the Air Quality Statements, things are likely to get a bit better tomorrow.

“After that, conditions improve a little bit, but we’re still looking at Special Air Quality Statements continuing throughout much of the work week.  Finally, we see towards Friday, a general shift in low-level winds, expected to come from the southwest on Friday.”

Coulson adds it will be relatively dry, and not a lot of rain is in the forecast for the next week, with only sporadic showers called for.
