Business, labour and municipal groups have come together and agree that time is of the essence when dealing with new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum by the US.

50 percent tariffs went into effect today.

Bea Bruske from the Canadian Labour Congress says the federal government has to take strong action.

“Ensuring that no American steel or aluminum is used in Canadian production,” Bruske told a news conference on Wednesday.

“You know, no integration of their materials, if they (the Americans) are not open to having our materials.  Counter tariffs have to be on the table.  We have to be meeting force with force.”

But the Candace Laing of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is cautious about issuing counter-veiling tariffs, saying it could hurt businesses that rely on American products.

“We do have some US steel coming into Canada now tariff free, so we can look at the use of targeted counter tariffs, but be careful to maximize impact on the US, while minimizing impact on the home front.”

Carole Saab with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities was also part of the press conference.
