NWMO site for the Deep Underground Repository near Ignace
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is embarking on the next phase of developing a Deep Geological Repository.
Late last year the NWMO selected a site between Ignace and the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation.
Spokesperson Carolyn Fell says they will be holding two consultation sessions in both Ignace and Dryden to get some feedback.
“There will be opportunities for communities to engage in the process through NWMO events and forums and to consult with regulators throughout this timeline,” Fell said during a conference call.
Fell adds that the first part of the process is gathering feedback on their proposal.
“NWMO is in the process of preparing that regulatory submission document and will actively seek input as part of that process. The preliminary assessment and the proposed mitigation strategies in the draft is designed as a starting point, but it will benefit significantly from input provided.”
Fell adds this is just the start of the process, because actual construction isn’t expected to begin until 2034, if they get regulatory approval.
