A new fire chief has been hired for the City of Kenora.

Gordon Howard has been hired to fill the vacancy when Dave Pratt retired back in September.

Howard had been the fire chief in Gananoque and was previously the deputy fire chief in Rideau Lakes.

He was also Director of Emergency Services and Fire Chief in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Howard trained as a paramedic in the Canadian military and led emergency management efforts for large-scale events.

He takes over from Dexter Hupe, who had been the acting fire chief for a couple of months.

Hupe returns to that role on January 6th, when Howard takes over as fire chief.
