The Grassy Narrows First Nation has marked World Water Day with a rally.

Judy DaSilva is an elder on Grassy and says they held a water ceremony as part of the rally at McLeod Park.

“This is part of our tradition, to give pay respect to the water that gives us life”, DaSilva said during the rally on Friday afternoon.

DaSilva says they also wanted to raise awareness of the pollutants that affect our watershed, like pulp mill effluent, mining and a proposal for a nuclear waste storage facility.

“It’s also to let Kenora people know, we’re facing a lot of dangers with the nuclear waste the going be buried upstream and the nuclear waste is so toxic.  You know, we’re not safe if we’re living downstream of it.”

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has chosen a site between Ignace and the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation as the site for a deep underground nuclear repository.
