Rally against nuclear waste storage - Thunder Bay - (CJ Goater/Acadia Broadcasting)
Members of the Grassy Narrows First Nation are organizing a rally aimed at federal politicians in northern Ontario, calling on them to take a clear stand on Indigenous rights related to nuclear waste disposal.
The group has emailed MPs in six northern ridings—including Kenora, Thunder Bay–Rainy River, and Sudbury East–Manitoulin–Nickel Belt—asking a direct question: “Do you commit to respect the right of First Nations to say ‘no’ to nuclear waste disposal?”
Organizers say the goal is to secure public commitments from elected officials before decisions are made on potential storage sites.
While no final location for a nuclear waste site has been confirmed, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has previously indicated parts of northern Ontario are being studied.
Grassy Narrows community members say they want to ensure that First Nations have a final say on what happens in their territories.
Calls and emails were sent to MPs in Kenora–Kiiwetinoong, Thunder Bay–Rainy River, Thunder Bay–Superior North, Sault Ste. Marie–Algoma, Sudbury East–Manitoulin–Nickel Belt, and Kapuskasing–Timmins–Mushkegowuk.
