Nusia (Frances) Dnes
February 24, 1924 – March 26, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved and cherished Nusia (Frances) Dnes on March 26, 2025, at the age of 101.

Born in Lviv, Ukraine, on February 24, 1924, Nusia’s life was one of resilience, faith, and unwavering love for her family and community. After enduring the hardships of war, she met the love of her life, Dmytro, and together they immigrated to Canada. They settled in Kenora, Ontario in 1948, where they married and built a home filled with love, welcoming their two sons, Myron and Benny.

Nusia was a devoted member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and an active leader in the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League. She lived her life in faith, love, and service to others. Passionate about preserving Ukrainian culture, she taught language and music to the children of the St. Nicholas Parish, organizing incredible performances for the church community. She was also a proud member of the church choir and co-founded the Ukrainian Summer School, which served children in Kenora for generations.

A talented cook and baker, Nusia’s kitchen was always filled with the comforting aromas of perohy, holubtsi, and other Ukrainian delicacies, made by the dozens with love. She was also an accomplished embroiderer and a skilled decorator of pysanky, the intricate Ukrainian Easter eggs, passing down these treasured traditions to her family and community. Her passion and generosity were evident in every aspect of her life. She embraced her faith with all her heart, always finding strength in daily prayer and devotion.

She was predeceased by her beloved son Benny and loving husband Dmytro. She leaves behind her devoted son Myron (Janice) and daughter-in-law Cheryl. She was the proud grandmother to Brad (Renae), Dan, Kathryn (Adam), Nicole (Gavin), and Natalie, and the great-grandmother to Brad’s children, Ben and Kelsey, and Dan’s children, Damian and Tristan, as well as their mother, Jill. She was also deeply connected to the Ratushniak family—her dear late cousins Pat and Tony, as well as their children Mary Price (Darryl) and Irene Olsen (Butch). She will be deeply missed by countless other cherished family members and friends.

While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing she is now in the presence of the Lord, reunited with those who have gone before her, and at peace in His eternal embrace. May she rest in peace, and may perpetual light shine upon her.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Pinecrest Home and The Lake of the Woods District Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness, providing Nusia with comfort and dignity in her final days.

A service and celebration of Nusia’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pinecrest Home or Lake of the Woods Hospital in her memory.
