The mayor of Sioux Lookout says the Strong Mayors powers that were bestowed upon him took the town by surprise.

Doug Lawrance says the new powers were not asked for and the town will be reviewing the matter as more information becomes available.

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout was one of 169 municipalities across the province to have them, along with Dryden, Kenora and Fort Frances.

The idea is to support faster decision-making and increasing the housing supply across Ontario.

Lawrance says that the mayor and council have always worked collaboratively to make thoughtful and informed decisions.

He suggests town council has not encountered situations where the use of strong mayor powers would have been necessary or advantageous.

Lawrance says true influence is earned not bestowed.
