New investment in STEM programming at the post-secondary levels.
Ontario’s colleges and universities will share $750 million from the provincial government to expand programs related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, says funding opens up more than 20-thousand spaces in programs across the province.
“Giving students access to cutting edge programs, hands-on learning opportunities and real-world work placements with employers so that when they graduate, they are ready to take careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by storm,” says Quinn.
“This essential investment will help address the growing demand for university STEM spaces, building the highly skilled workforce Ontario needs in critical sectors like advanced manufacturing, AI, and life sciences, says Steve Orini, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Ontario Universities.
“It comes at a pivotal moment when Ontario urgently needs to boost its productivity and economic competitiveness.”
Ontario’s colleges and universities have access to this funding upon signing new five-year operating funding agreements.
The province notes applications to STEM undergraduate programs at Ontario universities increased by 34% since 2020.
