Liberals likely to form minority government

Canadians are still waiting for some final elections results, but several news agencies predict the Liberals will forma minority government.

Since Monday, some ridings have been slow to reveal ballot results, and some races have been too close to call, sometimes flipping from a Liberal or Conservative lead with just a few polling stations.

Ballots from 54 polls still have not been counted. The Liberals are projected to win 169 seats, the Conservatives 144, Bloc 22, NDP 7 and the Green party 1.

Mark Carney will remain a Liberal prime minister, but he’ll need to work across party lines in the House of Commons. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh lost his seat, and so did Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, with both ridings turning over to the Liberals. Although Singh stepped down, Poilievre spoke to supporters on election night, implying he plans to stay on as party leader.

Some of the delay was because of advanced voting and mail-in ballots.

About 7.2 million Canadians voted at advance polls between Friday and Monday. About 270,000 voted by mail. And 230,000 people were hired by Elections Canada at 492 offices to fulfill all of the needs for a federal election.

Estimates show that more than 19.5 million people voted, which is about 69 per cent of the eligible population.
