A major project at the Moncrief Construction Sports Center is beginning this week.

Work is taking place replace the concrete slab at the Thistle Rink.

The new slab will feature heating pipes and insulation beneath the surface, which will reduce the risk of freezing underneath and heaving.

It will also simplify ice maintenance and speed up ice removal in the spring.

The old boards will also be replaced with new rink boards

The project is expected to cost about $2.3 million.

The money for the project comes from province’s Strategic Priorities Infrastructure Fund and is also supported by the City’s Recreation Centre Reserves.

The city says crews will be accessing the back of the building, but the boat launch will remain open and accessible throughout the summer.

Other than the Thistle Rink, including the walking track, dressing and storage rooms, most other areas of the Rec. Center will remain open.

Work is expected to finish in late September or early October.
