Update: Highway 525 near Whitedog open again

Highway 525 near Whitedog is open again.

It was closed earlier this evening due to a forest fire in the area.

The Ministry of Natural Resources says the blaze is located 3.2 kilometers south of the Caribou Falls Dam and 12 kilometers north of the community of Wabaseemoong.

The 0.5-hectare fire is not under control and received air attack from waterbombers on Thursday afternoon.

That was one of five active forest fires in the northwest region:

Dryden 4 is located at Borups Corners, approximately 41 kilometres southeast of Dryden. The 0.1 hectare fire is not under control.

Dryden 3 is located approximately 0.5 kilometres north of the Trans-Canada Highway at Ignace. The 1 hectare fire is not under control.

Dryden 2 is located approximately 6.6 kilometres west/southwest of McIntosh. The 1.2 hectare fire is not under control and received air attack from waterbombers in the initial response.

Sioux Lookout 1 was located near Doghole Lake at Mishkeegogamang First Nation. The 0.1 hectare fire has been called out.

At this time, four fires are not under control and one fire is under control.
