Elections Canada is broadening its review of the special ballot voting system.
The decision comes after issues were reported in two electoral districts during the 45th general election.
In Terrebonne, a postal code mistake on return envelopes caused at least one marked ballot to be sent back to a voter instead of reaching election officials.
A separate incident in Coquitlam—Port Coquitlam also led to concerns, prompting further scrutiny.
Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault announced the expanded review yesterday, saying it will assess employee training and ballot processing safeguards.
He emphasized the need for the system to evolve alongside the growing demand for special ballots.
“One of the strengths of our system is that it does evolve over time to meet the changing needs of Canadians,” Perrault said in a statement.
“This review is an opportunity to determine what needs to be improved to continue serving Canadians.”
Officials provided a detailed analysis of the issue to candidates and political parties yesterday as part of the review process.
