More new labour laws are coming to Ontario.
Labour Minister David Piccini plans to introduce a series of measures he says will protect workers.
They include new requirements for job posting platforms to have mechanisms to report fraudulent job advertisements.
Another will create an employer portal related to the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program.
Piccini says the portal will make it easier for employers to submit applicants for immigrant workers.
“If they’re contributing, paying taxes, working on a job site, filling an in-demand labour shortage, we have to make sure that we have that pathway,” says Piccini.
“So that’s our intent behind the employer portal. So that they can file applicants on behalf of those with whom they’re offering a job to.”
The proposed legislation would also exempt training facilities supported by provincial funding from certain approvals and permits.
Piccini says delays in building new centres or renovating existing ones hinder the ability to train workers in a timely manner.
“We want to ensure that bricks and mortar infrastructure is there to support workers as they take the next steps in preparing for good paying jobs and unleashing Ontario’s economy,” says Piccini.
The centres would still be required to maintain health and safety focused permits and approvals such as those under the Ontario Building Code and the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.
