Evacuations are now underway in two northwestern Ontario First Nations as wildfires move closer to communities.

Roughly 400 residents from Webequie First Nation are being flown to Barrie, with elders, children, and people with medical needs prioritized.

The evacuation is in response to the growing Nipigon 5 wildfire, which remains uncontrolled near the community.

Deer Lake First Nation has also declared a full evacuation as the Red Lake 12 fire advances. That blaze is linked to the larger Kenora 34 complex and is burning close to the community, prompting emergency officials to relocate residents for their safety.

Leadership in both communities say they are working with provincial and federal partners to coordinate support during the evacuations.
