New fertility tax credit planned for Ontario

The Ford government intends to implement a new tax specifically for families that utilize publicly funded fertility treatment programs.

Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy says eligible families could receive a credit of up to $5,000 a year.

“This credit covers 25% of eligible expenses up to $20,000, meaning that couples could receive as much as $5,000 in support when looking to grow their family,” says Bethlenfalvy.

Families will be able to claim the credit when they file their income tax forms next spring.

The credit comes as the province looks to expand access to fertility treatment programs.

Health Minister Sylvia Jones says they are now accepting applications from existing or new clinics.

“This is part of our government’s plan to protect Ontario by improving public services, investing $250 million over 3 years to increase the number of clinics participating in the Ontario fertility program and shorten wait times in both hospitals and community settings,” says Jones.

The province indicates that 50 Ontario clinics, which provide publicly funded fertility services and previously received provincial funding, have helped over 119,500 families.
