Some members of Kenora city council aren’t fans of the Strong Mayors Powers.

In fact, council is looking at supporting a resolution calling the Strong Mayors Powers to be removed.

Mayor Andrew Poirier says the resolution doesn’t have a lot of force, and Strong Mayors Powers can be useful in some instances.

“I’m not a strong advocate of it, but I think if it’s used properly, and it doesn’t mean you ever have to use it, but it could be there to,” Poirier told council this week.

“But if its abused, it’s like anything else.”

Councillor Barb Manson also feels the Strong Mayor Power can be useful.

“Whether the mayor uses them or not, they are there to ensure that the city follows provincial priorities.  I support our mayor.  I believe in him.  Sometimes bold actions are needed for our community.”

Kenora was one of 169 communities given the Strong Mayor Powers, which is supposed to make it earlier to get homes built faster.

The resolution says more than 100 municipalities have already rejected Strong Mayor Powers.
