Ontario’s premier says there are things that all three levels of government can do to get more new housing built.
A recent report by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says Canada needs to double the pace of housing construction to make housing more affordable.
Doug Ford suggests a number of changes that can be made.
“If the governments can jump in there, and get rid of the HST, the provincial side and the federal side, it starts stirring up the economy,” Ford said during a press conference on Tuesday.
“But we have to get, again, the Bank of Canada to lower the interest rates,”
He suggests there are other things all three levels of government can do to lower the cost of building new homes.
“It never one fix. It’s always a fix here, a fix there, a fix there and then we stimulate it. There’s no reason the Bank of Canada should not be lowering these interest rates, and again, I’m going to be all over them because it doesn’t sound like they are listening.”
Ford adds that he would like to see cities like Toronto reduce development charges, because that is driving up the cost of new houses.
