The Kenora Youth and Family Wellness Camp has a new lease on life.
Over the weekend, the camp rebranded itself as Makate Waagamichiwanang Gakinaa’amaatiwin Youth and Family Wellness Camp and is now a separate entity from the Kenora Chiefs Advisory.
Becoming a standalone organization, the camp has now become a charitable entity.
Chief Chris Skead from Wauzhushk Onigum says it’s a significant milestone for the camp.
“This is a huge step forward for not only our organizations, but for all our communities as a whole,” said Skead, on Behalf of the Board of Directors.
“This space is for our youth, for our future, and by expanding into its own entity the camp is really creating a space for true healing and advancement,”
In the meantime, the camp will continue on as a partner with the Kenora Chiefs Advisory but will function independently.
KCA purchased the land the camp is on in 2020 and has offered land-based programming, cultural education, recreational opportunities, and mental wellness supports.
