Four new wildfires were reported across northwestern Ontario on Monday, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Red Lake 54 is located southwest of Sampson Lake, about 62 kilometres east of Poplar Hill First Nation. It is 2.5 hectares in size and currently not under control.

Red Lake 53 was located about 2.5 kilometres southeast of the Nungesser Road’s junction to Pikangikum. It was called out at 0.1 hectares.

Red Lake 52 is located east of Lillycrop Lake, about 43 kilometres north of Red Lake. The 0.1 hectare fire is considered under control.

Nipigon 11 was located south of Black Sturgeon Lake Road’s junction with Alder Road, about 54 kilometres northwest of Nipigon. The fire was called out at 0.1 hectares in size.

There were 33 active fires in the northwest region as of Monday evening. Eight were not under control, two were being held, eight were under control, and 15 were being observed.

Fires of note

Red Lake 12 near Deer Lake First Nation and Sandy Lake First Nation has been remapped at more than 195,000 hectares, with growth on the northwest and western portion.

Officials said fire behaviour was low on Monday thanks to rain and higher relative humidity across the fire area.

Areas of concentrated heat have been greatly reduced, said MNR, with the northwest area near Finger Lake having the most hotspots.

Crews continue to patrol for smoke and use pumps and hoses to put out hotspots throughout the southern and eastern sections.

Sioux Lookout 18 near Cat Lake First Nation measures more than 23,000 hectares and continues to show minimal fire behaviour, said the daily report.

There are currently three FireRanger crews and four helicopters assigned to the fire.

Monday saw a mix of sun and cloud with a few scattered afternoon showers. A drying trend is forecast for the rest of the week.
