Zyg was born in Walsrode, Germany on June 25, 1945. His family immigrated to Canada in 1951, arriving in Thunder Bay, to the area called Fort William at that time. Zyg was a member of the first graduating class at Lakehead University in 1965, in Engineering Technology. He started his career with Great Lakes Paper Company and later also worked for McMillan Blodel, Can-Car Bombardier (Hawker Siddeley Canada), Valmet Enerdry, ES Fox and Willocreek Industries. He also worked with Bill Adamson at TriUs Mechanical and was the landlord at Lakewood Apartments. Zyg loved to create and build and worked as a project manager not only in his professional life but also in his personal life. He never stopped problem solving, building, creating and looking for his next project. He designed and built the house his children grew up in, in Murillo, in the countryside just outside of Thunder Bay. In 1992 he and Allyson moved to Longbow Lake, where he again designed and built his retirement home. This lake house was also the summer residence for his grandchildren, who returned to Canada every summer from living overseas. It is here the family built so many memories, regularly hosting family and friends from around the world. Zyg loved life, laughter, a good meal and a great martini. His kindness and generosity touched the hearts of so many people. In celebration of this amazing man, please, mix yourself a dry martini (Polish vodka, of course), garnish with an olive, and raise your glass to toast a life well lived!
A Celebration of Life for Zyg will be held at 4pm on Friday July 25, 2025 in Thunder Bay, at 1876 West Riverdale Road.
Zyg loved nature and was a self-professed tree hugger. In honour of his memory, please consider a donation to, or involvement with Forests Canada. https://forestscanada.ca/en
