The Nishnawbe Aski Nation is rejecting a report into a fatal shooting at Anicinabe Park last summer.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit cleared an OPP officer of any criminal wrongdoing in the death of a 57-year-old man on June 25th, 2024.
NAN grand chief Alvin Fiddler says four separate officers had their weapons drawn, but only one discharged the rifle and the report does not analyze why.
Fiddler suggests the SIU’s report raises more questions than answers and says the process is severely flawed.
He adds there is also no analysis of Bruce Frogg’s state of mind at the time and how his mental state could have led to his actions, or how officers are trained to deal with people in emotional distress.
Frogg has been identified as the man who was shot and killed.
He had doused himself with gasoline, armed himself with two meat cleavers and set the park office on fire.
Frogg then stepped towards the firefighters, and the OPP officer discharged his rifle.
Frogg was shot three times in his chest and abdomen and passed away later that same day after undergoing surgery.
Fiddlers states the SIU investigations are often narrow in scope, and they are focused on specific actions taken by police at a particular point in time and may not consider significant, broader systematic issues.
