Kenora’s new Rural Generalist Model for Physician compensation seems to be paying off.
The new system was indroduced early in the year and went into effect April 1st.
Owen Doerksen is a physician recruiter for the All Nations Health Partners and says they’ve had some recent success.
“Our successes for the past year, I believe we signed eight, or nine physicians into the community with five of which are working in primary care, which is huge for us,” Doerksen told city council at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday.
Doerksen also believes that the new model for doctor compensation has really helped their recruitment efforts.
“A lot of that has happened in the last few months since this new model actually and generating interest in it. We’re really, really putting an emphasis on primary care, getting those family medicine doctors here…the emergency doctors and just supporting the community has been our top priority.
Dr. Jilly Retson says under the new funding model, not only are the doctors at the top of the pay scale in Ontario, their administrative burden has been lessened, and they can work in many different fields of medicine.
