The idea of creating a boat lift to get to the Winnipeg River into Lake of the Woods is being looked at.
The City of Kenora has conducted a feasibility study.
Councillor Graham Chaze says he supports the concept.
“There is a lot of people that would use this, and I think it really supports our Winnipeg River residents,”
“It helps justify the property taxes that we charge. It would help with assessed value on the Winnipeg River. So, there are a lot of positives here.”
But councillor Lisa Moncrief has some issues with the idea, including some environmental concerns.
“We have zero zebra mussels now on Lake of the Woods, and it would be nice to keep like that. The way that happens, you don’t transfer boats from one body of water to another. So, I think environmentally there is probably more concerns than costs.”
There used to be a boat lift connecting the lake to the river, but Moncrief says it was not well used.
