The provincial government is protecting northwestern Ontario’s moose population by enforcing hunting tag regulations.

Three people from Thunder Bay are facing fines following an illegal moose hunt in October 2023.

The hunt took place in Wildlife Management Unit 15B.

A man had shot a bull moose under the authority of a tag in his possession.

However, the hunter opted to contact two friends who were in Thunder Bay, roughly 160 kilometres away at the time of the hunt.

The friends went to the harvest location, and ultimately, one of the friends opted to use his tag instead of the hunter who shot the moose.

This allowed the hunter who shot the moose to keep his tag, allowing him to continue hunting.

The illegally harvested moose was then transported to a residence in Thunder Bay and distributed amongst the three men.

Conservation officers began an investigation following the 2023 hunting season, which resulted in the seizure of the moose and the subsequent charges.

The provincial government is reminding hunters of the requirement to party hunt in accordance with the regulations and that a tag must be invalidated immediately at the time of harvest and at the harvest location.
