The Ministry of the Solicitor General has announced an inquest into the death of a worker at a mining site north of Thunder Bay.

The inquest will be overseen by Regional Supervising Coroner, Dr. Kevin Miller.

Edouard Gallant died following injuries sustained while working at the Lac Des Iles mine on May 27, 2020.

Gallant was struck by a combination of blasted ore saturated with concrete and water that dropped suddenly in an ore pass.

An inquest is a public hearing conducted by a coroner, lawyer, or retired judge before a jury of five community members.

Inquests are held to inform the public and to examine the circumstances of a death.

The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The details regarding the location and date of the inquest are being released at a later date.

Inquests are mandatory when there is a death on the job at a mine, pit, or quarry.
