The Government of Ontario has formally cancelled its contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink.

The contract with Starlink was for $100 million to provide internet service to remote First Nations and underserviced areas of Ontario.

Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce wouldn’t say how much the buyout was for.

“I can confirm we’ve cancelled the contract at this point, and we look forward to bringing forth alternatives to the people of Ontario so we can get people connected to the internet,” Lecce told a news conference on Thursday.

“94 percent are connected, but there is more work to do.”

Lecce adds that premier Doug Ford has kept his promise in cancelling the Starlink contact.

“We are standing up for Canada.  We have taken a clear position of ending American procurement.  $30 plus billion has been denied from the Canadian supply chain.”

Ontario promised to cut ties with Starlink because of the US imposed tariffs.
