Kenora shutout of Housing Accelerator funding

The mayor of Kenora is accusing the federal government of playing politics when it comes to housing grants.

Andrew Poirier says they applied to the Housing Accelerator Fund have received nothing.

“We’re not very happy about this…we thought we had a solid business plan and we could also point to in excess of 600 units ready to go in very short order and we did not get any money,” complains Poirier.

Poirier suggests politics played a role in the decision-making process.

“If they are going to dole them out (Housing Accelerator grants) based on politics, and it should be based on merit, not what would be good to re-elect an MP.  Myself and my discussions I’ve had with other mayors, that’s what we come to the conclusion when we do the analysis of who got what.”

Poirier suggests every municipality west of Thunder Bay, represented by a Conservative MP, also did not get any money through the Housing Accelerator Fund.
