A historical occasion for NOSM University today.

The medical school celebrates its inaugural convocation as Canada’s first independent medical university.

Sixty-four newly minted are being recognized, including eight Indigenous MDs and eight Francophones.

“Our new graduates bring a great deal of pride to our institution,” says Dr. Sarita Verma, President, Vice-Chancellor, Dean, and CEO of NOSM University. “They bring knowledge, compassion, and a dedication to health equity, and they are now ready to help others live in good health and with dignity. I am honoured to welcome them to the profession.”

Adding to the occasion is the installation of Indigenous child rights activist Cindy Blackstone as the University’s inaugural Chancellor.
NOSM University became empowered to grant degrees last year after coming under the auspices of Lakehead and Laurentian Universities since its inception as the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in 2005.

Since then, over 900 MDs have graduated, of whom 73 are Indigenous and 179 are Francophone.
