Susan Anne Norris (NEE Thurston)

December 31, 1934 – December 19, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Susan (Thurston) Norris announces her passing in the early morning of Tuesday December 19th, 2023, just 12 days before her 89th birthday. Susan passed away peacefully with her daughter and granddaughter by her side. She leaves behind Brian Norris, her husband of 63 years, her daughter Teri Frey and her sons Robert Norris (Penny) and Douglas Norris (Anne). She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Shannon Matheson (Reid), Kailynn and Wyatt Norris and her great-grandchildren Chloe and Easton Matheson. She is predeceased by her daughter, Baby Girl Norris.

Susan was born in Winnipeg, MB to Harold and Margaret (Olafson) Thurston, both predeceased. The family then moved to Clandeboye, MB to the newly acquired farm that is still in the family to this day. She was one of six children and is survived by her sister Fran (William) Kozen and her brother David Thurston (Lorraine). She is also predeceased by her sister Marion Cox and her brothers John Thurston (Wilma) and Delbert Thurston (Heather).

Susan studied nursing at Saint Boniface Hospital, in Winnipeg, and worked at the Selkirk Mental Hospital for a short time. She then pursued her career at a hospital in Geraldton, where she met her husband Brian, who had recently arrived in Canada from England. They married in 1960, began their family and eventually settled in Whitney, Ontario. Once they started having children, Susan decided to be a stay at home mom, but she volunteered her time within different organizations, including Whitney Home Support.

She had many hobbies, which included being an active member of the Anglican Church, cross-country skiing, reading and crafting.

The family would like to thank the staff at Pinecrest Home for the Aged, in Kenora, for their care of Susan during the last few years. A special thank you to nurse practitioner Mike Limerick for his care and compassion during the last few weeks of her life.

In accordance with Susan’s wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation. Cremation has taken place. The family hopes to plan a celebration of Susan’s life in warmer months. Donations to the Canadian Red Cross in Susan’s name would be appreciated.
