Garry Donald Sutherland
November 6, 1944 – February 1, 2024

It is with deep sadness that the family of Garry Donald Sutherland announces that dad suddenly passed of natural causes at his home.

Garry was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Hugh Sutherland, his eldest brother Jackie Sutherland and his twin brother Grant Sutherland. Also by his special friends Donnie and Marlene Brown.

Garry is survived by his three loving children, Curtis and Colleen Sutherland, Christopher Sutherland and January Sutherland. Also by his beautiful grand-daughters Rachelle and husband Karson Scavarelli and Amelia Sutherland. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Darlene Tacknyk. In addition to his immediate family, he leaves behind special cousins Donna Gail and Albert Lecot and Jackie and Karen Folster, his special great niece, Taija and husband Mark Caya. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins that he thought fondly of over the years.

Garry was a born and raised Kenora boy. In his younger years, he was a hockey player on the local ‘ponds’ here in Kenora and especially liked to play at the old Thistle Rink. As he settled into adulthood with his family, he was into Kenora’s social curling scene, where he was affectionately known as “Sudsy”. When Curt and Chris were youths, Garry coached their soccer team where he tried to instill a fair-play attitude in his young sons, that they both carry on today. He enjoyed all the typical Kenora activities; ice fishing, camping and the ever-popular blueberry picking with his ever faithful canine companion in Sheba.

Garry’s career was encompassed in the trucking industry. Whether it was behind the wheel going from one end of Highway 1 to the other, or down to the southern most United States or behind the desk managing the regional Motorways terminals through the 80s in Kenora and Dryden. He claimed he could ‘drive anything, no matter how many gear shifts’ the beast had. And that was never more apparent than when he proudly taught his only daughter to run 3 pedals and a stick! He retired from the trucker life in 2011 and eased into his next stage of his life that afforded him the time to travel Canada with his two brothers Jackie and Grant, where they solidified their brotherly bond in their later years, which meant a lot to him. He really treasured those trips.

At the request of the family, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family also invites you to leave any good, fond memories or funny stories of Garry on the funeral website, we know he would love to read them from up there.

He taught us to stand and to walk
He taught us to run and skate and to shoot a puck
He taught us to drive with a stick
He taught us to love and laugh and forgive
Dad, forever loved and always missed.
