The Ministry of Health is preparing to issue new MRI and CT scanning units this fall.
There are plans to add 49 MRI units.
The Ministry of Health is now accepting applications from hospitals and clinics, with licenses to be issued in the fall.
The Ministry says the expansion will allow for more than 100,000 additional scans to be done annually, reducing wait times to 28 days in every region of the province.
“When it comes to wait times for surgeries and procedures, the status quo is not acceptable. That’s why our government is taking bold action to boost access to surgeries and diagnostic imaging so that Ontarians can conveniently access the care they need sooner, closer to home,” states Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, in a media release.
“Increasing the number of MRI and CT scans being done each year is the next step we’re taking to reduce wait times for more publicly funded surgeries and procedures, ensuring people get the care they need when they need it.”
Sioux Lookout’s Meno Ya Win Health Centre was approved for an MRI scanner earlier this year.
Thunder Bay is the only other hospital in northwestern Ontario with an MRI.
