This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Anicinabe Park occupation.

To help mark the occasion, Nation Indigenous People’s Day celebrations will be held there on Friday.

Craig Levand is one of the organizers and says it will be a peaceful gathering.

“9 am we’re going to have an opening prayer, and we’ll be having some live music at 10 am with speeches from our local leadership, some chiefs, city council and the mayor,” outlines Levand.

“We are going to have a barbeque lunch served by our gracious officers at the Treaty Three Police and the Ontario Provincial Police.”

Levand says they also want to observe a couple of significant milestones.

“We’re combining events to make it more youth oriented.  With Bimose’s graduation pow wow going down at the Harbourfront, we are going to have a morning of celebration by honouring the 50th anniversary of the Anicinabe Park occupation, with some of the survivors.”

Lavand adds that they’ll be marching to Harbourfront in time for the graduation of Bimose students under the Janel Contracting Pavilion.
