More than 70-thousand air travellers could have their travel plans interrupted this weekend.
The union representing Westjet’s aircraft maintenance engineers has issued another strike notice that could take effect as early as this Friday evening.
It comes just days after a previous strike notice was pre-empted after both sides agreed to resume bargaining this week.
“Receiving a second strike notification from the union after they mutually agreed with WestJet in front of the CIRB (Canadian Industrial Relations Board) to return to the bargaining table in good faith for an additional four days following last week’s initial disruption is disheartening and unacceptable for our guests, employees and the communities and businesses that rely on our service,” states Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Chief Operating Officer, in a release.
Westjet says it is still committed to reaching a deal but is also preparing for the potential of a strike.
“It is our obligation in the coming days to ensure the safe and orderly takedown of our network and to minimize the risk of stranding our guests, our crew and our aircraft,” says Pen.
Measures the airline is considering include operating a reduced schedule.
It also plans to communicate directly with air travellers who book through Westjet by email regarding any travel changes.
