A six-unit housing complex to be run by the Kenora Association for Community Living has been approved.

The $2.2 million project is located at the top of 4th Avenue North where it connects with 4th Street North, next to the old Abitibi mill property.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford says the province will contribute almost a million dollars of the cost.

“It just all came together and a little over a couple of weeks ago we finalized an agreement that puts the Province of Ontario in for $900,000, nearly 40 percent of the project’s value,” Rickford said following an announcement of the funding Thursday afternoon.

Henry Wall is CAO of the Kenora District Services Board and says they are the other partner in the venture.

“This project in particular came together quite fast. So, it took quite a bit of envisioning but once we got the ministers involved, it moved pretty quickly. Three of the unit will be for transitional aged youth and three will be for older adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities.”

The KDSB purchased one lot back in 2019 and the city gave the agency the adjoining property, which was a road allowance.

Construction on the complex will begin right away as a contact for the work has already been awarded.
