Canada’s nurses want to big changes to healthcare systems.

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions are calling for nurse-patient ratios and mandatory long-term care standards to help the system recover.

President Linda Silas says a patchwork approach means access to care is suffering, and more family doctors and nurse practitioners are needed.

She says without an effort to address the staffing crisis, the cracks in the system will continue to grow.

They’re making recommendations ahead of a meeting of premiers at the Council of the Federation in Halifax next week.

Union leaders plan to engage directly with the premiers.
