Kenora has a new group on the Crime Prevention and Community Well-being Advisory Committee.

It’s called the Neighbourhood Empowerment team.

Steve Woolrich was recently hired by the city to examine the downtown with his expertise in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design.

He’s been training 18 people in his specialty.

Woolrich says the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team is made up of city staff, police officers and community members and he’s doing three training sessions with them.

“It’s important that, once I depart, the work continues,” says Woolrich in a recent interview.

“It’s important that people are properly trained in some of these methodologies and that the city is able to utilize that in a positive way moving forward.”

Woolrich adds that one of his goals was to train people in the community carry on his work.

“Being taught aspects of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design as well as place-making, and some of the healthy built-in environmental tools used in other provinces.  It’s extremely beneficial to have that team now.”

Woolrich has been living in the city since the beginning of May and will end his tour at the end of this month.

He says he’ll present a final report to the city by the end of this year.
